About Video Trimmer
The Video Trimmer cuts a screen recording down to just the segment you actually need. Long recordings capture everything — logging in, navigating, the false starts — when the bug itself only takes ten seconds. Trimming before you upload keeps attachments small, respects upload limits in Jira, TestRail, Testmo and Slack, and saves reviewers from scrubbing through minutes of setup.
Everything happens in your browser: pick the start and end points on the timeline, preview the range, and the tool re-encodes only that segment with the browser's built-in encoder at the source's own quality. Your recording is never uploaded to a server, so confidential screen captures stay on your machine.
How to use
- Drag in a video file, or click "Choose a file" — MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV recordings all work.
- Drag the two handles on the timeline to set the start and end of the clip, or play the preview and use "Set start/end to playhead" for frame-accurate cuts.
- Click "Preview from start point" to check the range, and untick "Keep audio track" if the sound isn't needed.
- Click "Trim video", wait for the real-time progress bar, then preview and download the trimmed clip.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is decoded and re-encoded entirely inside your browser using the MediaRecorder API — nothing is sent anywhere, so confidential screen recordings stay on your machine.
Why does trimming take as long as the clip?
The tool re-encodes the selected segment in real time by playing it through a canvas, so a thirty-second clip takes about thirty seconds. That is the trade-off for doing everything locally with no upload and no software to install — and only the selected range is encoded, not the whole recording.
Does trimming reduce the video quality?
The output is encoded at the source video's own bitrate and original resolution, so quality is preserved as closely as the browser encoder allows. If you also want a smaller resolution or heavier compression, run the trimmed clip through the Video Compressor afterwards.
What format is the output?
Most browsers produce a WebM file (VP9 or VP8); Safari may produce an MP4 instead. WebM uploads fine to Jira, GitHub, Slack and the major test management tools.
Can I cut a section out of the middle?
This tool keeps one continuous range — everything before the start handle and after the end handle is removed. To keep two separate sections, trim the recording twice and attach both clips.
